The route threads through Lavaux, a UNESCO-listed vineyard region whose stone-walled terraces have risen from the lakeshore since Cistercian monks planted the first vines in the twelfth century. Montreux itself became the Swiss Riviera's cultural anchor in 1878, when the opening of the Simplon rail line brought European aristocracy to its palm-lined quays. Charlie Chaplin arrived in 1952, settling in the hillside hamlet of Corsier-sur-Vevey after Hollywood's political climate turned hostile. Today the castle preserves 25 buildings spanning four courtyards, including the intact thirteenth-century frescoes in the Chapel of Saint George and the vaulted munitions halls that once stored gunpowder for the Savoyard garrison.
